HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND RISK ASSESSMENT (HIRA)

DEFINITION OF HAZARD
Hazard is the potential adverse effect of an agent or circumstance. This can be be categorised as
– Insignificant
– Minor
– Moderate
– Major
– Catastrophic

DEFINITION OF RISK
Risk is the probability or likelihood that a hazard will occur. It can be categorised as
– Almost certain
– Likely
– Moderate
– Unlikely
– Rare

Multiplication of hard value and risk value leads to an impact value. Urgency on mitigation plans can then be determined. Risk can then be reduced or totally removed.

Health risk assessment are usually performed by industrial hygienists.
